Every year, Lincoln High students and staff look forward to that one day in September when they get out of their classes early to go outside for some great food, time with friends, and awesome face-offs. Festivus is what they call it; celebrating different cultures coming together as one. Associate Principal Jill Able said, “Teachers and students get to know each other in a different way other than the classroom or discipline for administrators. It really builds a sense of community.”

This year, Festivus took place on Friday, September 20th. Students were on an alternative schedule all day, allowing them to be let out of their last class at 1:10 pm so that they could go outside and have some fun. Some 1,600 students exited the south building and went to the southwest side of the south building where about 30 different clubs had set up booths to sell food or candy or let students participate in games. There was everything to eat from fry bread and popsicles to brownies, ice cream sundaes, egg rolls and flaming hot Cheetos.

Football players, however, were not allowed to participate in the games for fear that one of them might get hurt before their game that night, but this didn’t stop them from having fun. Every single Lincoln High student was in attendance plus some students from the focus schools. About 12,000 tickets were sold which comes to a total profit of around $3,000 for Lincoln High clubs and organizations.

The student-faculty challenges that began four years ago as a way to add offerings at Festivus, were fun for students and staff.

There were 12 total challenges on the Rock Wall, The Joust, and the Obstacle Course. The very first year these challenges were held, the students won, but the past two years the faculty members have won.

So who were the big winners this year?

On The Joust, Jordan Sorge defeated International Baccalaureate Coordinator, John Heineman, Nathan Flemming lost to Social Studies teacher Lucas Varley, Associate Principal Tanner Penrod defeated Caleb Thiessen, and Brian Wagnitz defeated Social Studies teacher Andrew Bargen.

On the Rock Wall, Kai Bray defeated Instructional Coordinator Denise Craig, Science teacher, Shelly Fargo defeated Eric Tran, and Cody Selvage defeated Social Studies Teacher Lindsey Herting.

Lastly, on the Obstacle Course, Jason Towery defeated business teacher Nicholas Madsen, English/ Oral Comm Teacher Justin Holbein defeated Andrew Hahn, Andy Ngo lost to Associate Principal Mark Larson, Say’Von Mitchell defeated English Teacher, Terrence Keefe, and “The Frau beat The Fry”; World Language department chair Marissa Wanamaker defeated John Frey.

The overall score: Students with 6 wins, and Faculty with 6 wins – ending in a tie.
