Student Council wanted your socks, and although that may seem weird, there’s a good reason behind it! Socks are the most needed, but least donated, article of clothing in homeless shelters. All throughout the month of October Student Council had been gathering socks to donate to the People’s City Mission.
“We decided to do a sock drive, because we were looking for local charities we could support,” StuCo President Vashti Parks said. “When we decided we wanted to do something with the People’s City Mission, it was clear that socks were a huge need in the community,” Parks added.
The idea of “Socktober” came from Robby Novak, also known as “Kid President”, a young man who likes to voice his opinions in the form of YouTube videos. So Student Council drew inspiration from his video and decided to bring the idea to Lincoln High.
Student Council made a goal of 100 pairs of socks. This number was chosen because they thought it was a reasonable amount that could still make a difference. The socks were collected in the Media Center and Counseling Centers and in bins near the front doors.
Members of Student Council checked the donation spots every day to gather what had been donated. The socks had to have been donated by the end of the month, it was “Socktober” after all.
The final number collected was 114 pairs of socks. So StuCo didn’t only reach their goal, they surpassed it. All of the socks are being taken to the People’s City Mission as soon as they provide Student Council a time that is convenient for drop off.
