The Advocate – This is Our Story

The Advocate is the second-oldest continuously-published school newspaper west of the Mississippi River, with Omaha Central’s The Register holding the title of oldest. Here is a timeline of The Advocate and the events that shaped what our newspaper is today. This timeline will be updated as more information is located and documented.

1890s

• February 8, 1895 – The Advocate is formed by Professor F.C. Jackson and a committee of four others (Maurice Berkson, Lewis Ryan, John Ledwith and Henry Tucker) who were charged with the creation of the first Lincoln High School newspaper. Jackson was named Editor-in-Chief, Berskon was named Assitant Editor, and Tucker was named business manager.
• March, 1895 – Volume 1, Number 1 of The Advocate is published
• March 30, 1895 – First student appointments to The Advocate were made and Bessie Lane was named student Editor-in-Chief.

1900s

2000s

2010s

• 2019 – The Advocate moves to a digital-only format, ending production of printed versions.
• 2019 – With the retirement of Keller at the beginning of the school year, Daniel Carraher takes over the production of The Advocate as the advisor.

2020s

• 2023 – With the resignation of Carraher, William West assumes the roll of advisor of The Advocate.
