Over the past couple years we have seen glimpses of positive movements for our Varsity football team. This year we are seeing quite a bit more. Lincoln High has started the season of losing their first couple games, but we haven’t done so without showing some flashes of greatness. The kind of greatness that gets you to the point of being a great football team. There are Sixteen Sophomores, Seventeen Juniors, and Ten Seniors. Apparently a very young team. I caught up with Senior Running Back Yohanna Shokai. The two year varsity player gave me a great interview. When asked how the team was developing since fall practice started he replied with “We’re still developing.
There are a lot of new guys, and new players that need to be developing as the season goes on. This statement shows that the team is doing a lot better. They had a very strong second half against Omaha Bryan, with Shokai breaking loose for three rushing touchdowns. “We just came out in the second half, and took advantage he said.” He also noted that there were many young players proving themselves worthy such as “A.J. Lewis, Martiez Prather, Tyren Baker, Ruon Chuol, and Alonga Chol.” I also had a chance to catch up with Sophomore Running Back Martiez Prather. When asked what his major goals, and expectations were he said “Be the best I can be, try to be a leader on the team, and hopefully make it to the playoffs.”
When asked what it was like after losing the first few games of the season he said “It made us work harder. Obviously we should have won against Omaha Northwest, but we came back next week and did better on both sides.” It can be very difficult with such a young team. Trying to make adjustments, and pull things together can be a rough challenge. As the season goes on I can see this Lincoln High team become a lot stronger as a whole.
