By Najm Jabbar- For many students and staff at Lincoln High, soccer is considered the dominant sport in the summer. Also, there is no doubt that Lincoln High’s boys soccer team has became one of the dominant teams in Lincoln this season. The Links won three tournaments this season including the Omaha North Invite for the fifth year in a row. They also had five wins in a row before the district tournament started.
The team had a tough start this season, but they got themselves a fresh start after their loss against Norfolk High School. They took down five teams and scored 17 goals in five consecutive games.
The team was showing an astonishing improvement at the end of the season, and they played one of the most memorable games of the season against the state’s 9th ranked Omaha Burke. The Links fell to the Bulldogs in overtime when Burke scored their goal from a headshot by Nate Bratt. That wasn’t the only time Lincoln High was unfortunate in the overtime. Four of the losses the Links had were in overtime including the last one.
“We fought for 100 strong minutes,” said, Lincoln High senior and defender Fadhil Majo. “And it happened that they had a head shot out of a corner kick. I am very proud of the team and the coaches! We had a very successful season with a 5 struck win. We also won the Omaha North invitation for the 5th time in the row.” Majo said.
Another area where the Links made sure they succeed was the goalkeeping. The Links had only 3 goals scored on them in the last 8 games. While they scored 21 goals in their opponents’ nets. Braydin Neiman is third in the state rankings for goalkeepers this season.
After finishing their senior year at Lincoln High, both Daniel Mandungu and Paul Muragizi will be playing soccer for their college teams. Daniel Mandungu will be part of the York college soccer team, while Paul Muragizi is going to play for the Wesleyan Soccer team.
