Festivus Fun for All

Lincoln High students and staff celebrated Festivus, its annual fall celebration, on Friday, Sept. 19, 2014. Once again the weather was perfect. “ Kids had fun,” LHS Associate Principal Jill Able said. “There weren’t any issues as far as that goes, so it went well.”
Festivus is a time for students and staff to go out and have a good time, get to know each other outside of the classroom. “It’s also a time for the clubs to fundraise so they have some money to do what they need to do with their clubs,“ Able added.
The event lasted 2 hours from 1:10 to 3:05 p.m. It costs about $4,000 to run Festivus, and we made that money back between the ticket sales and teachers buying tickets for students. We sold about $6,800 worth of tickets. Clubs earned good amounts of money to help them do things with their clubs.
This year there were informal student vs. teacher matches. In years past we’ve had time set up and said you know a person Is challenging this person at a certain time. This year we revised it and so any student got to challenge any faculty member that they had in their area, Social Studies teacher Andrew Bargen said.
There were more clubs participating this year than in the past. Asian Caucus sold eggrolls, Red Cross club sold wings, and the Link Crew sold icy pops, a variety of other things like cookies, cupcakes, popcorn, pop and other things. Some of the events that were sponsored by some clubs were the dunk tank, face painting, the rock wall, inflatable obstacle course, D.J and others.
Festivus used to be called Back to School Bash in the late ’90s. Lincoln High is the only school that celebrates Festivus. Everyone in the school got involved they had fun, met new people, tried new things, and learned about different cultures. Lincoln High is a whole community and festivus is for everybody to have fun and celebrate together no matter what grade they’re in.
Everyone is different in their own way but one thing that brought us all together was Festivus.
“Seeing teachers and students interacting with each other having a good time I think it’s the best part about Festivus,” Able said.
