Legislation Regarding Arming Teachers Resurfaces

The aim of many legislators is positively impacting school safety. Legislative Bill (LB) 1339 proposes that arming school staff, and providing mapping to first responders is the answer.

School Safety is always in the thoughts of our legislators minds. The issue of school safety has been spoken about very frequently by the Nebraska unicameral, with one solution being resurfaced constantly; arming teachers. LB 1339 is a bill with a multitude of opportunities for schools, including mandatory mapping of schools that would be shared with first responders and  possibly arming teachers, though it would be up to the individual if they would choose to carry a handgun.

When speaking on this bill, Senator Danielle Conrad proposed alternative solutions, like providing more mental health resources, and teaching more problem solving skills at all school levels.

As Legislative Aide Tony Baker was interviewed, he discussed that this bill would have many positives for certain students and staff that attend schools in more rural areas.
