Three people were asked what kind of effect it has had on them, one person responded with the answer “I would say, while it is not harming my quality of life, it has an overall negative effect on me.” Another student had responded that it has had a horribly negative impact on them. Another very thoughtful answer that was given is from a sophomore and they had stated: “AI has had a negative impact on my life as a whole. I have had to worry that the artwork that I even made in my free time could have been used to train an uncreative AI. It’s hard to know that your main hobby could be crumbling as you live your life in the modern world. Imagine Shakespeare had to worry about a street urchin taking his work.”
A couple of students had also been asked how Ai has affected their lives. A senior responded with “I don’t believe ai has done anything positive, ai is hurting the environment it increasing greenhouse gas emissions, using gallons of water just to send one message. On top of that the facilities are usually built in rural areas ruining the resources which heavily impacts the people living there. Then of course there’s a huge chance for people to lose their jobs or artist even; identifying people is harder!” Another response that stood out was from sophomore “It pushes a lot of misinformation with the way it collects data — usually mixing up facts with opinions or theories. Causing the people around me and myself to be fed fake facts from formerly trustworthy cites. My main examples being Google’s AI overview pulling from fanfiction or chatgpt giving an answer without factual basis. I’m also an artist, meaning the rise in promoting ai as an art tool, when it is not, is demeaning to the effort I and many other artists go through to put value and actual emotions into our work. It’s overall lowering the standard for quality in this field, people are becoming okay with sloppy, often lifeless images or videos for entertainment and marketing.” It’s been becoming significantly harder for artists as ai keeps advancing because people seem to be unable to tell if something is truly an artist’s work or if it was made by ai.
These same students were also asked about how Ai has affected their learning as a student. We were given some very notable responses on how they feel it has affected their education. The same senior was asked and replied with; “AI has a horrible impact on me, especially my education! It genuinely infuriates me. Researching information for projects has become incredibly difficult because ai makes news. It’s hard to tell what’s true and what’s fake. Unfortunately as much as I’m against it, it’s hard to not be tempted to use it. I mean students have so much going on outside of school work, activities, and home life. The idea of all your work and answers to every question in the world at your fingertips without putting in any effort sounds nice doesn’t it? However that also seems to be my biggest problem, yes it sounds appealing but the cost isn’t worth it.” It is really hard to not be tempted to use ai anymore, but it’s also not a very reliable thing to use due to mistakes it seems to make.
We also got responses from 2 different sophomores who are both very much passionate about the effects of AI in our learning and our lives. One of those responses was “I hate when I have to research for a project that the illogical and absurd Google AI is giving answers without any meaning. The dumb thing has once told me that you can make the color blue out of the other pigments of the RYB paint colors. It’s a lazy way of teaching and summarizing things for the name of efficiency. If you truly cared about a subject, you would put in your time to search for the best answer to your question. Always use creditable information in anything you do because trusting an AI for any info about anything with an ounce of humanity won’t benefit you in the long run.” How can we trust AI if it’s giving us answers that are false? Another sophomore that was given the same question stated. “Ai has unfortunately affected my education through teachers and students making Ai more common in an educational setting. It feels like teachers are having to lower their expectations from their students because they might try to use AI, or that they need to use it themselves to try and detect AI in students’ work. It also, as previously mentioned, spreads a lot of misinformation when people will glance at the AI overview instead of looking at where the information is being pulled from.” Our teachers shouldn’t have to lower their expectations on everyone’s work just because one person used AI to do it for them.
It’s not great the things Ai has been doing or the effects it’s been having on the world and on us. But it’s also hard to get away from it and not fall for the temptations of using Ai on things. As it almost seems like it’s being pushed onto us even if it’s not by teachers it’s by what we use to look stuff up; specially do to the AI overview that’s on google now. And it’s getting hard to trust everything we search anymore not knowing what’s made by Ai and what’s not. It’s especially hard when it comes to videos and pictures as they can be very hard to tell. AI has become advanced. It’s not reliable as it’s hard to tell if it’s true or false information to rely on. So even if it’s tempting to use it you should try and not to as it can get you in trouble seriously if caught.
