Break Dancing added to Olympic Games

The sport officially entitled “Breaking” will debut in 2024, pushing the boundaries of what is considered a sport

Set to begin in the 2024 Paris Summer Games, the Olympics have added a new sport to the programme- break dancing. This sport is completely unique in the Olympic games, and it has drawn some confusion from Olympic fans. According to the official website of the Olympics, this new competition will involve athletes completing “power moves” as they improvise and  freestyle to a DJ’s music. The judges will then decide the winner by scoring each athlete in six categories: personality, creativity, musicality, technique, performativity, and variety.

Breaking to be added to the Olympic Games in 2024

Although this is certainly a strange addition, it is not without precedent. In 2018, break dancing appeared in the Summer Youth Olympic Games in Buenos Aires. Evidently, the event was such a success that it has been added to the official Games.

So far, two Breakers from the United States have qualified: Sunny Choi, age 35, and Victor Montalvo, age 30. Both Breakers have won competitions in the past, including having both won a gold medal in the 2022 World Games dancesport competition in their respective general groups. Although these two athletes both seem perfectly qualified, the US is supposed to be represented by four athletes, two B-Boys and two B-Girls. America will be watching to see who’s going to “beat” out their competition and qualify for the remaining spots! That’s all for today’s “break-ing” news!
