Around the beginning of September, during a quiet lunch period. Thriller, by the one and only Michael Jackson blared through the speakers in the cafeteria. Puzzled students looked around to find the source of the noise and slowly hobbling through the doors were some freaky looking zombies! Some people faked screamed and others were just plain freaking out. Maybe for show?
This wasn’t just something the theatre kids did for fun. Mary Schuster- Graf, the new guidance counselor, used this to get LHS juniors and seniors to take the ACT prep classes. The main slogan was, “It’s coming, but I’m not afraid,” which some students carried signs around that said this. The main idea was to get kids to see that even zombies aren’t afraid to take the ACT, so they shouldn’t be either.
Kim Szelag and Molly Thomas had also helped. “Of course Kim Szelag helped an awful lot with running the music,” Schuster-Graf stated. Thomas had helped provide all of the make-up and the students who dressed up as zombies.
The idea came from a student who was going to participate in the zombie walk. Schuster-Graf thought, maybe this could be a great way to promote the ACT prep classes. Although, something stood in the way, “I thought, ‘Who would have enough courage to walk through a crowded lunchroom dressed as a zombie?’ Of course drama kids,” Schuster-Graf said. Then a couple more problems popped up. Would the theatre kids be up for it? Will the theatre board even allow it? The only thing for Schuster-Graf to do was to try. Once it was ran passed the theatre board, the plan was set into action. The theatre kids did not hesitate to volunteer either.
“That was one of the coolest things. How people just kind of came together to make this happen,” Schuster-Graf states.
The first session for the prep classes was a few weeks ago, and they’re already half way through all of the classes. The classes are held after school, on LHS campus in room 300, during the PLC from 2:15-4:15. It’s not too late to sign up, but if you do it’s best to talk to a counselor so they can help you get somewhat caught up.
“At this point, they’d be missing half of what they could’ve gotten,” Schuster- Graf sadly says.
There will be other sessions starting on October 23rd and going through to December 1st. “My recommendation would be that students should take the prep classes, because it’ll raise their ACT scores by
