StuCo raises money for Make-a-Wish: Students get to wear hats

Phenix Killen (12) shows his wrist band that he got for donating to the Student Council Make-a-Wish Foundation drive. Students who donated at least $1 got to wear a hat during the school day.

If you thought you saw more students with hats than usual in the building today, you were right.

Student Council members raised money for the Make-a-Wish Foundation this week by taking donations in exchange for the privilege to violate the dress code for a day. When students paid at least $1 to a Student Council member, they got a wrist band. Wearing that band on Friday (today) allowed them to wear a hat during the school day without consequences. LHS’s dress code policy currently states that hats are not to be visible at any time during the entire school day.

“We raised $95 through about 90 donors, students and staff,” Student Council Sponsor  Denise Craig said. “All the money goes to Make-A-Wish.”

“I like being able to express myself with the clothes I wear” senior Phenix Killen said Friday.

Killen donated $2 for the cause. “I like that I don’t have to take off who I am when I walk in the doors. It makes me feel better when I wear a hat – expressing that I’m a basketball or football fan. It’s also good conversation starter.”

Since the drive was so successful, there’s a good chance StuCo will do it again, so start saving your pennies.

“At this point, we plan to do this again, probably in January,” Craig said.
