Walk through Johnson Gym Hallway any day of the week after school until around 6:30, and you’ll hear the volleyball players practicing for any one of their big games, tournaments, or triangulars. Lincoln High Varsity Volleyball has had their ups and downs since the start but the one thing that has never left: the stars. Head Coach Megan Christensen claims there isn’t just one star, but many that make up a volleyball team, “There is not just one but a few star players,” Christensen said
Of course, teams are never made up of simply just what we call ‘stars’, but they are the ones who keep a team together when you’re down, or struggling in a game. What she sees happening to the team is they will continue to improve and their skill level will increase. Practices are competitive drills that are game like scenarios and last about two hours long.
Coach Christensen has been coaching for two years as a Varsity coach and before that she coached reserve. She played volleyball at Southeat and at Wayne State.
We interviewed some of the players and got the inside scoop.
Hedi Herbert said practices are “exhausting but fun.” She plays libero and has played since she was seven.
Alyssa Childers likes that her coach tells her what to do and calls time out appropriately. Alyssa says “drills consist of warm up, passing drill,block drill, and at the end they scrimmage JV.” She plays middle blocker and has played since five years old.
Madison Swinnerton likes how her coach is positive and motivates her to do her best. She told us that practices are game like drills and work on previous things they can do better at from games. Madison also stated that “I play outside”. We also asked her how long she played and she responded “kindergarten”.
