Fourteen years ago, LHS alum George Weaver (class of 2004) made a decision. After his grandmother Ollie passed away, he wanted to continue her legacy of making traditional soulfood.

Granny brought the south to Nebraska as far as cooking,” Weaver said.

“She would be in the kitchen cooking just because she could and loved to do it,” Weaver added. “When she cooked, she didn’t just cook for her children and herself, she cooked for all those who were needing something to eat. Granny passed down her cooking to her children in which they have passed down to their children,” Weaver said on his Facebook post.

“So after she passed 14 years ago, I made it a point to open a place of my own in remembrance of Granny,” Weaver said.

When he was little, Weaver said, she would always talk about wanting to have her own business in a brick building, and when he came across the now Granny Weavs Soul Food Catering business on 621 N 48th Street, he knew that he had to take it.

He originally started his business on September 24th, 2016, but opened the actual building on June 26th, 2017.

His grandma had already done some catering things, so when he started his own business, a lot of people were aware of the name. Although he started Granny Weavs in memory of his granny, the name comes from his dad’s last name, George Sr. Weaver, otherwise known as “Sonny.”

At Granny Weaves they make and serve family recipes that have been passed down for generations. They cater for events as well as serve food straight from their building. They serve things such as wings, beef briskets, ribs, burgers, desserts and way more. Prices vary depending on what

you get; sandwich combos range from $5-9 and chicken combos range from $7-9.

Little George has always been a motivated person. Before he graduated in 2004  his biggest motivators were extracurriculars. He was involved with a variety of things, such as Diving, Campus life, and the Hip Hop Club.

But his biggest motivator now is, “seeing guests come in my place of business and order food that my granny showed me how to make as a child. And also being able to be my own boss,” Weaver said.
