You hear horror stories about freshmen year – kids getting duct taped to the wall, being pushed into lockers, etc. The students of LHS’s Link Crew worked hard this year in order to help freshmen not be worried about their first year here at “The High.”
In room 300 on August 30, 2012, all the members of Link Crew gathered in order to be crowned for their efforts. Link Crew sponsor Kim Szelag dressed up like a queen and knighted members while co-sponsor Amy Stetson gave them a Burger King crown and a prize.
“We wanted to let the students know that we appreciated everything they did for the freshmen’s first day, and to encourage them to stay in Link Crew,” Szelag said.
Link Crew organized the entire Freshman Orientation on the first day and team building activities so kids from other middle schools could get to know each other.
“You’re all going to have to go to the same high school, so you might as well get to know each other,” Szelag said.
Szelag and Stetson have been with Link Crew since the beginning two years ago. Many of the sophomores, and of course the freshmen, have them to thank for making the first week of school not so scary.
“I wished something like that had been done for me because, I just kind of came in lost,” Szelag said.
Link Crew is still planning some of the events for later this year, but we have a good crew this year and if it is going to be anything like the crowning it will be goofy and fun. Next year anyone who would like to be in Link Crew talk to either Stetson or Szelag.
