Currently at Northeast there is a program designed to teach students in 9th-12th grade about the important role of food, energy, water and societal systems also known as FEWSS. The district recently announced they will be expanding this program to all LPS high schools. This program will be embedded into math, science, world language, and social studies classes for all grade levels. This will offer students new learning opportunities to explore careers in a variety of new topics. 

Dr. Sarah Salem, the associate superintendent for teaching and learning, explained that the district chose to expand the program because the opportunities can benefit all students.

“This will no longer be a ‘school-based’ program. Instead, we are making modifications, updates, or extensions to the current curriculum. We hope to integrate some of these field trips and opportunities as early as next year as we plan with UNL and as budget allows,” Salem said. Students can hope to expect changes to the curriculum starting next school year. 

The original program allowed 11th and 12th grade students the opportunity to take college classes and receive college credit.

“There are many options on the table as we continue to collaborate with UNL. We are always interested in continuing to provide dual credit and are collaborating with the university to determine the next steps,” said Salem when asked about the continuation of college credit opportunities.

According to the Nebraska Department of Agriculture, one in four jobs in Nebraska are related to agriculture. This program is designed to help students understand the need for agriculture and explore careers in this field that were previously unknown.

“Our current LPS students will be solving the problems of tomorrow. Understanding the role and importance of Food, Energy, Water, and Society Systems gives them many pathways for careers in many of these areas and aligns with the needs of our Nebraska economy,” Salem said.

This program will help allow all students to be able to dive into their passions, and what they want to pursue a career in. It provides opportunities for everyone in LPS and helps students to get more experience in the fields they want to work in.
