Can you imagine the smell of your favorite homemade goods? Everything from brownies, cookies, cupcakes, and even macaroons
appeared in DECA’s first annual F(r)IGHT Hunger Baking Competition on Tuesday, October 31st, 2017.
The competition was created as a fundraiser for The Food Bank of Lincoln as their first community service event. Staff versus staff, over 20 teachers entered the competition, and over 80 votes came from teachers and faculty.
The prize for the fan favorite was Nebraska Football tickets to the November 24th game against the Iowa Hawkeyes. The winner of the competition was Julie Trembly, who entered pumpkin patch-themed oat bars. The runner up, Samantha Woog, entered peanut-butter balls and won a $25 Visa Giftcard.
“I really thought that this was going to be hard to pull off, but I’m glad we put the work into it,” junior Kody Maguire said. “We definitely made a lot of money and got a lot of donations to give to the Food Bank, and I think we could do this again next year.”
Although this was a staff only event, students donated to the cause as well. So far, LHS DECA has made over $100 and 100 cans and boxes to donate to the Lincoln Food Bank.

I’m really excited to take these donations to The Food Bank,” junior Co-President Jayla Toliver said. “I really think we can help change people’s lives just a little bit by helping them out with this food. And that’s really the goal of DECA. This is just the start of giving back to the community and being a part of it is what matters.”
